With our white coats on we feel the aura of pressure.
\nPressure to be professional, to act accordingly.
\nWe walk through the hospital with our heads held high, knowing we have a duty.<\/p>\n
Tossing our white coats aside, true personalities shine through.
\nMost are gleaming of kindness and enthusiasm to learn,
\nOthers are tainted.
\nThese souls strive to reach a level of professionalism behind their white cloak,
\nbut fail to reach expectations while unhidden.<\/p>\n
What I see frightens me,
\nbecause these individuals will one day be responsible for the lives of others.
\nThey lie to professors to get what they want.
\nThey come to mandatory sessions, only to depart minutes later.
\nThey cheat.
\nThey sell prescription drugs.
\nThey abuse prescription drugs.
\nThey get intimate in the study spaces.
\nThey do it all with a cheerful face.<\/p>\n
What I see frightens me,
\nbecause I never want to be like them.<\/p>\n
\nWhat can be done?
\nI\u2019ve tried to approach them,
\nit ended friendships.
\nAdministration knows,
\nyet I see no change.<\/p>\n
Perhaps most terrifying,
\nthese individuals exist at all medical schools.
\nThey hide amongst the rest of us,
\npolluting the image of our profession.<\/p>\n
So here I stand, turning a blind eye,
\nbut what can I do?
\nI can\u2019t change the mindset of others.
\nI can\u2019t change their actions.<\/p>\n
I only hope they aren\u2019t my doctor.<\/p>\n
